  • A great response in the file sharing debate

    0

This is a bit old, but I hadn’t had a chance to post it and thought it would beg good for those who didn’t see this the first time around.

For those who don’t know, there’s a debate raging in the UK (and other European countries with similar legislation) over proposed legislation that would be a “3 strikes” policy on those that are accused of file sharing.

Last month Lilly Allen came out in favor of this legislation, but in the process of blogging about this, she plagiarized TechDirt in the process (whoops!). In response, Dan Bull released this video/open letter that pretty much summarizes my stance as a musician on going after file-sharers.  This is definitely worth a look.

  • Hilarious Michael Jackson video

Ok, this may be in poor taste and may be pretty vulgar, but I couldn’t help but laugh right in the middle of the airport terminal as we’re waiting for our flight.

  • Vegas Michael Jackson tributes

One of the interesting things about traveling during tragedy is seeing the local reaction, especially in a tourist trap like Vegas.  You see a lot of people trying to use their resources to try to pay homage to Michael Jackson.  Two of which I captured and wanted to share.

Bethany and I went down to one of our favorite Vegas spots – Fremont Street – the night after Jackson died.  Freemont has these light/laser shows that they run across their room.  This evening’s show was simple, showing images of Michael Jackson’s album covers while playing “Gone Too Soon” from his Dangerous album.

The second image that caught my eye was at the Venetian on Friday night.  When you travel up the moving walk ways, you got past a wax museum that has representations of many celebrities.  The museum folks put out their statue of Michael Jackson on the main display, which resulted in many people laying down flowers by the wax Jackson.

I’m not sure what to make of that one, but definitely shows that everyone responds to grief in their own way.

  • Another day the music died

My cousin put it best when she Twittered those words about Michael Jackson.  I just saw the news over Twitter when we took a rest on our Honeymoon in Vegas this afternoon.  We’re both in shock about this.

I guess now we’re going to be subjected to this wall-to-wall coverage where the media is going to speculate – in some cases widely and inappropriately – on his death, but I’d much rather think about his life at this point.

This guy wrote the book on much of the modern music, especially with Pop and the way he danced.  Boy Bands like N’Sync and Backstreet Boys need to attribute all of their moves to him.  This afternoon the Wynn kept showing these commercials for Beyonce’s upcoming concert, and I couldn’t help but think about how many of those moves are influenced by Michael Jackson.

I think as we gain some distance from Jackson’s death and contemplate his life, many may end up seeing him the same way we see Vincent van Gogh: An artist that transcended his craft and likely is so talented that he became crazy.  Michael Jackson’s life may be seen as a Greek tragedy, a figure where you wonder if the people closest to him really cared about him – or simply saw him as a meal ticket.

How very sad.. I’m queuing up a Michael Jackson playlist on my iPod right now.

Any idea about the point of this video?  I think I may have to watch it another 12 times to get an idea what it’s about.
