I would definitely have to agree with you about many of your thoughts, even though I know I contributed some of the thoughts via our conversation about this topic. Unfortunately I don't have anytime right now to post my thoughts thoroughly on my blog so I just put a few of them here. My biggest issue and concern with the Podcast Awards is the fact that I don't think it meets the purpose it's intended to. I'm sure that all the brains behind the awards would like to recognize 5 best podcast in their respective categories and I would make an argument that many of those podcasts aren't in the top 10 in their category, but that's just my opinion. It's not that I feel certain podcasts should be in place of others my concern is how podcasts get nominated. My impression is that the shows are largely if not solely nominated by listeners. While this will give a good idea of what people think of a show or shows I think they went about this in a horrible way. All this tells me is that one show was able to drive more traffic to the awards website than the other shows. A site that is overwhelmingly populated by ads in fact the site navigation is buried in between ads. Ads for podcasts mostly I see, and they do state how they are non-profit. But to me there is a major and unfair bias as well as a conflict of interest. The purpose is go to the website and nominate your favorite shows, yet I go there see all the ads for the other shows and see a contest for the podcast that can drive the most traffic to their site. What does the winner get? An ad spot of course. Shouldn't it be obvious who is driving the most traffic to the site? Isn't that what the award is supposed to prove? What exactly is trying to be accomplished here because if you look at the website for a minute before casting your vote it will seem pretty apparant that the overall goal is not for the awards. And I know a rebuttle to that is how it's meant to drive more traffic to other podcasters sites, but it just seems a little too quid pro quo to me. The only podcasters that seem to have banners are the ones that had people click your banner on their site. This isn't going to help the little guys, it just helps the big guys get bigger.
